We are (almost) cannibals.

More than a billion people eat animals that are so close to them biologically that you can transplant organs between them. People who have smelled people burning alive even say we smell like roasting pork. In the middle ages when it was illegal to dissect people for medical research doctors cut up pigs and studied their anatomy to learn about humans.In the days before they grew insulin with genetically modified bacteria, they used pig or cattle pancreases. We do not differ so much from pigs, however, you want to look at it.

Yet every day millions of pigs are slaughtered and eaten with great relish. People like bacon so much, they even write songs about it. I also ate bacon. I enjoyed it, not realizing the implications of eating a sentient animal, that feels pain and forms bonds just as we do. I believed, like the people around me, that meat was an essential for good health, instead of being an optional addition or survival-driven necessity.  If you follow the principle of Truth by learning progressively more about the consequences of your actions but feel scared to go further, it should be a warning sign for your actions. If you don’t want to know, something is probably wrong. If you are not willing to do it yourself, you should think very carefully before you pay someone else to do it for you. You should think if it is really necessary.

I find it an interesting perspective to think of eating pork as being almost cannibalism.It implies that either cannibalism isn’t all that bad, or most people are all that bad.
